Power companies have a continuous battle with outages and spikes caused by bird strike or other creatures such as possums or flying foxes that regularly come into contact with energised lines. Many Solutions have been implemented in a somewhat haphazard fashion with several companies, involved in the provision of line hardware and insultators now finding themselves being pressured into offering up a solution to minimise these animal encounters.

In the past they have usually been temporary measures that remain in place long past their serviceable life, or are of such rigid and inflexible construction that subsequent follow up maintenance is all but impossible in the mainstream of routine sericing. Utilities have recognised the necessity to reduce these problems and are attempting to source an easier and more workable solution to "Bird-Proofing" to ensure a more reliable and improved supply.

Glove and Barrier

With higher demands constantly being placed on service providers to guarantee an uninterrupted supply, much more work is being carriedout on "Live Line", as glove and barrier becomes the normal means of accessing services. It also makes bird proofing a more difficult and dangerous proposition. For more than 10 years Vinny Australia has been developing and modifying tits own style of bird proofing covers and has adapted some of the more common types of covers used by the industry to incorporate their own single piece wrap-around Style of cover with slide locking material to hold onto insultators, without the need for tools to secure cable ties.

Conducted several trials

Drawing on the experienced gathered from the successful application of these covers, Vinny Australia has conducted several trails in coastal areas, high pollution and industrial areas, and in areas with extreme concentraions of birds. The covers have repeatedly performed well against others used in the same locations. Recently, Vinny replaced covers in an area where cockatoons had attacked and completely removed or destroyed other covers beyond any serviceablity. Since then, Vinny covers were placed inthis problem area without a single outage being reported over a period of several months.

Modular System of covers

After 18 months of development and prototyping. Vinny Australia has now developed and patented a unique modular system of covers that can be applied to 22 and 66kv lines on both clamp top and tie top insultators that incorporate a corona dampening technology. In addition, the line is protected in either direction by greater than 1 meter. These covers have been made in such a way as to allow "Live Line" application even on 66kv lines.

Hot Dipped Galvanised pole caps

With the experience gained in providing these covers, Vinny Australia have moved up the pole and have now become a supplier of Hot Dipped Galvanised pole caps to the victorian, new south wales and queensland markets. These caps are galvanised to AS-4680 for Hot Dipped Galvanised products and are independently tested for conformity to these Australian Standards.
